With increasing incidence of chronic diseases, the need to control health care costs, and aging populations connected health technologies are becoming increasingly important. The Telehealth / Telemedicine Aggregation Manager (AM) is an essential device in the connected health system enabling personal health devices to log data in a remote EHR (Electronic Health Record) for family and clinical review. The AM can take the form of a cell phone, a personal computer; or a dedicated device. The system solutions for a dedicated AM with video output include the following key components:

  • Applications Processor: the OMAP3530 processor (http://focus.ti.com.cn/cn/docs/prod/folders/print/lm3s9b92.html) is an ARM Cortex A8 based architecture which provides audio, camera, and video peripheral interfaces. It incorporates an HD video accelerator to enable HS video streaming. Device vendors not requiring HD video streaming should use the lower cost AM3517 (docs/sitesearch/searchdevice.tsp;jsessionid=O04VKC2Z3SZMVQC1JAVRVQQ?partNumber=omap3530) which supports HD UIs over DVI but does not incorporate an HD video accelerator. Both Media Processors come with recent Linux distributions and are code compatible.
  • Connectivity: Continua Health Alliance is dedicated to establishing a system of interoperable personal health solutions. In order to be certified as a Continua Aggregation Manager, the device must integrate at least one Personal Area Network (PAN) interface such as USB and Bluetooth, and one Wide Area Network (WAN) or Local Area Network (LAN) interface, such as Ethernet, WiFi and ZigBee.
  • Power Management: The TPS65950 analog companion chip has been designed to work together with the OMAP35x devices. It contains buck converters, low-dropout regulators (LDOs), a charger module, an entire audio module with digital filters, input amplifiers, and output class-D amplifiers. The TPS65950 IC provides several additional functions, such as a high-speed (HS) USB OTG transceiver.
  • Battery Management: In order to support video streaming, wireless connectivity and large screen, large capacity batteries with multiple cells in series and in parallel may be needed. Accurate fuel gauging maximizes usable battery capacity and ensures orderly shutdown. High efficiency battery charger reduces heat dissipation and keeps the system cool.
  • DVI: The TFP410 is a DVI 1.0 compliant digital transmitter that supports display resolutions ranging from VGA to UXGA in 24-bit, true-color pixel format. Some of the advantages of this universal interface include selectable bus widths, adjustable signal levels, and differential and single-ended clocking.
